HEIC to PDF — questions

Why won’t my iPhone photos open on Windows?

HEIC is Apple’s default camera format and Windows does not decode it out of the box — older versions need a codec from the Microsoft Store. That is why a photo that looks fine on your phone can arrive as an unopenable file. Converting to PDF sidesteps the problem entirely.

Do I need to convert to JPG first?

No. Add the HEIC file directly. The tool decodes it in your browser, which is the whole point — you should not need a second tool to use the first one.

Does this work on Windows and Android?

Yes. On Safari and iOS the browser decodes HEIC natively; everywhere else a decoder loads on demand the first time you add a HEIC file. It only downloads if you actually use it.

What about Live Photos?

The still frame is used. A Live Photo is a picture plus a short video, and a PDF page can only hold the picture — which is the part you want in a document anyway.

Will the photo lose quality?

The photo is embedded at its original resolution. HEIC is already a compressed format, so it is re-encoded once for the PDF; at normal viewing and print sizes the difference is not visible.

Why is my PDF so much bigger than the HEIC files?

HEIC is unusually efficient — roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG. PDF cannot store HEIC internally, so the photos are re-encoded and the file grows. Use Compress PDF if you need to send it by email.
