How to Convert PDF to Word

1

Add your PDFs

Click “Select file” or drag and drop one or more PDFs. Batch conversion is supported.

2

Convert locally

The converter (~7MB) downloads once on first use, then is cached. Scanned pages fetch text-recognition models (~10MB) the first time they are needed. Conversion runs entirely on your device with real per-page progress.

3

Download your Word files

Each PDF becomes a .docx. Downloads start automatically — one file directly, several as a ZIP.

Every step runs in your browser. No server uploads, no waiting.

Why use this tool

DukPdf’s PDF to Word tool converts PDFs into editable Word documents (.docx) entirely on your device. Text, tables, lists, headers and footers, and images become real, editable Word content — not a picture of the page. Scanned pages are recognized automatically with built-in text recognition (OCR), so image-only PDFs convert too. The converter is a dedicated engine compiled to WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and there is no queue. Large documents convert noticeably faster in the free desktop app, which runs the same engine natively. Going the other way? Use Word to PDF. To make a scanned PDF searchable without converting it, use OCR PDF.

When you'd use this

Edit a contract

Turn a PDF contract into an editable Word document to update terms, names, or dates without retyping the whole thing.

Reuse report content

Pull tables, lists, and body text from a PDF report into Word so you can rework them in your own documents.

Recover text from scans

Convert scanned letters and forms into editable text — the built-in OCR reads image-only pages automatically.

Update old documents

When the original Word file is lost and only the PDF survives, convert it back to .docx and keep working.

PDF to Word — questions

Will my formatting be preserved?

Text, headings, tables, lists, headers and footers, and images are reconstructed as editable Word content. Most documents come out ready to edit; very complex layouts (dense magazine-style pages, unusual scripts) may need touch-up in Word.

Do scanned PDFs work?

Yes. Pages without a text layer are detected automatically and read with built-in text recognition (OCR), so image-only PDFs become editable Word documents too.

Is the output really editable, or just an image in a Word file?

Really editable. The converter rebuilds paragraphs, tables, and lists as native Word structures — you can change text, resize tables, and restyle content normally.

What about password-protected PDFs?

Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then convert the unlocked file.

Is my PDF uploaded during conversion?

No. The entire conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly. Open DevTools → Network tab while converting — zero upload requests carrying your document.

Why do large documents take a while?

Browser conversion is CPU-bound and runs on a single thread. The free desktop app runs the same engine natively and converts large documents much faster.
