Unlock a password-protected PDF

How to Unlock a PDF

1

Add your protected PDF

Click “Select file” or drag and drop a password-protected PDF. The file is read in your browser.

2

Enter the password

Type the current open password. The decryption runs locally in your browser — the password is processed on your device and never sent to a server.

3

Unlock and download

Click “Unlock”. The decrypted file saves to your Downloads without any password.

Every step runs in your browser. No server uploads, no waiting.

Why use this tool

DukPdf’s Unlock PDF tool removes the password from a protected PDF — entirely in your browser. You must know the current password. The decryption runs locally, so the password and the document never touch a server. Once unlocked, the file is saved without any password. To learn how DukPdf keeps your documents private, see our privacy approach. To add a password to an unprotected PDF, use Protect PDF. For a step-by-step guide, see our lock and unlock PDF guide.

Unlock PDF — questions

Is my password processed on a server?

No. The password is used to decrypt the file locally in your browser. It never leaves your device. Open DevTools → Network tab while unlocking — zero upload requests.

Can DukPdf unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. DukPdf requires you to know the current password. We do not store passwords and cannot bypass encryption. If you forgot the password, you will need to find another way to recover it (such as the file creator or your password manager).

What passwords can DukPdf remove?

DukPdf can remove the open password (required to view) and the owner password (required to edit, print, or copy). Both are decrypted locally once you provide the correct password.

Will the unlocked file be exactly the same as the original?

Yes. The unlocked file is identical to the original except the password is removed. Content, formatting, and metadata are unchanged.

Can I unlock a PDF that I don’t own?

Technically yes, if you know the password. But unlocking a document you don’t have permission to access may violate laws or terms of service. Only unlock documents you are authorized to access.

What’s the difference between Unlock and Remove Pages?

Unlock removes a password from a protected PDF. Remove Pages deletes specific pages from any PDF (with or without a password). They serve different purposes — use Unlock for password removal, Remove Pages for page deletion.
