One megabyte is the loosest of the common limits, and for most documents it barely counts as compression — a text PDF is typically a tenth of it, and the engine’s first quality step covers the rest. For those, the engine works down its ladder only as far as the megabyte requires, which usually means a gentle resolution trim rather than a visible change. Compress PDF — questions

Is 1MB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?

DukPdf targets 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter of the two readings. The output therefore shows as under 1MB in both conventions — macOS Finder’s 1000-based MB and Windows Explorer’s 1024-based one.

How big a PDF can I compress to 1MB?

There is no fixed input cap — the practical question is the ratio. A 20MB deck to 1MB is a 20:1 squeeze that images absorb well; a 200MB scan archive is better split first with Split PDF so each part gets its own megabyte.

Why did my file come out well under 1MB?

The search keeps the best quality that fits, and quality steps are discrete — if the first step lands at 400KB, that is what you get. A result far under target means your document compressed easily, not that quality was wasted.

Do hyperlinks and bookmarks survive?

Yes. Compression rewrites how the PDF is stored, not what it contains — links, bookmarks and form fields carry through intact.
