Compress PDF to 500KB

How to Compress PDF

1

Add your PDFs

Click “Select files” or drag them in — several at once is fine. The 500KB target is preselected from this page.

2

Check the target

500KB suits most uses; drop to 200KB for strict portals or switch to “No limit” for the engine’s balanced default. The setting applies to every file in the batch.

3

Compress and download

Click “Compress PDF”. Files land in your Downloads with sizes listed before and after, so you can see what the target cost.

Every step runs in your browser. No server uploads, no waiting.

Why use this tool

This page compresses your PDF to 500KB or less — a limit loose enough that most documents fit at high quality. Where the tighter targets have to trade scan resolution for bytes, 500KB usually stops at the first or second step of the quality ladder: images keep most of their detail, and a mixed document of text and pictures generally looks unchanged at reading size. The target binds the whole file. A multi-page scan that would fight a 200KB cap tends to settle comfortably here, which is why 500KB is the number to reach for when the limit is yours to choose — small enough to email and archive, large enough not to look compressed. If your portal is stricter, the 200KB and 100KB pages run the same engine against tighter budgets. Batches work too: each file is measured against 500KB on its own.

When you'd use this

Email attachments

A 500KB PDF sails under every mail provider’s limit with room for several more attachments beside it.

Multi-page scans

Contracts and agreements scanned at 10–30 pages fit 500KB while staying crisp enough to countersign.

Website downloads

Brochures, menus and price lists served from your site load fast at half a megabyte without looking degraded.

Bulk archiving

Compressing a folder of statements to ~500KB each cuts storage several-fold while keeping every document printable.

Compress PDF — questions

How much quality do I lose at 500KB?

Often none you can see. Text is untouched by design, and 500KB usually leaves enough budget for images to keep their detail at reading size. The visible-loss cases are large photographs viewed at full zoom.

My PDF is already under 500KB — will this do anything?

Yes. A file already under the target still gets a standard compression pass, so it typically comes out smaller than it went in. If compression would have made it larger, you get the original bytes back unchanged.

What happens with a 50MB PDF?

It works, with expectations set: a 100:1 ratio means image-heavy pages will be reduced hard. The engine steps down its ladder until the file fits or the floor is reached — either way the result list shows the size it actually produced.

Can I password-protect the compressed file?

Compress first, then add the password with Protect PDF. Encrypted PDFs cannot be compressed, so the order matters — a protected input is refused with a clear message rather than silently mangled.

Does compression change the text or layout?

No. Pages are not re-rendered; text, fonts and layout survive byte-for-byte in meaning. The savings come from images, font subsetting and structural rewriting.
